what difference between a 97-98 LS1 head and a 2001 LS1 head, if any?
i am considering buying a pair of used 98 LS1 heads and porting them myself. they're a dime a dozen since so many are buying head/cam packages. i have always done my own porting and have been following the LS1 casting for some time. are there any differences between any of the model year LS1 castings? then, does anyone have a set for cheap?

Get a 99 and up. The 98's don't have the coil packs on the rail. They are bolted directly to the valve cover.

I agree, get a set of 99-00 heads if you have a 2001. 97-98 heads have a few differences that make them a pain in the butt to install on a 99-01 car.

rwj383,
The heads are different! They are not a direct bolt on replacement. Stay with the same year heads if possible, less problems that way. (I was told the water jackets have been moved) I looked into this before I did my head and cam package.
Best of luck to ya!
