Default Oil Leak continued.... I believe it IS the rear plug. Check it out.

Hey guys,
If you saw my first post from a few weeks ago I said I would be updating shortly.

Read that first
http://forums.corvetteforum.com/show....php?t=1842751

Well today I pulled off the pressure plate and flywheel to expose the pilot bushing. After removing the pilot bushing I could see the rear plug (behind the pilot bushing), and it was all beat up and crooked. I wiped it all clean and Im gonna check it out in the morning to confirm that is where the oil is leaking from. So the next step is to replace that plug.

The rear main seal is PERFECT, and there was no oil on the flywheel bolts and I could tell a good amount of sealant was used the last time they were torqued down.

The bad news, all that oil on my pressure plate, clutch (ram HD) and flywheel left them badly scorched. The whole assembly will be going back to Ram for reconditioning.

Here are the pictures.

Rear Main two

FLywheel toasted!

And if anyone knows any tricks for this freaking clip on the rear of the torque tube on a 2001 let me know. Im gonna check out the torque tube bushing while I have everything apart.

Later,
Max

Glad you found it before pulling the rear cover and seal for nothing. This is how it goes in, from your photo's it doesn't look that bad.

Thanks for the tech page. Would you happen to know the part number for the plug, or is it a generic cup style plug?

I don't see any sealant called out in the shop manual. I'd certainly put a thin layer of some high temp silicone sealant around the outside of the new hole plug before installing it.

I agree 100% about the sealant, I will def. be doing that, as soon as I find a new plug.

I can look it up tonight or one of the forum GM vendors can likely find it too. I posted the part number some time back, not sure if I can find it with search.

It just takes a large pair of snap ring pliers.

You can usually remove them with a screwdriver if your careful but putting it back together will take the snap ring pliers.

Here's the part. I can't find a listing for the 2001 even though the diagram shows otherwise, the part listing is for 97-99. Hopefully this will get you started.

I found this number too 24502262. They both are like the same price. Probably the same thing... They are like $4 each.

Well here is the proof that the rear plug is the culprit. After I wiped it clean and let it sit overnight.

And here are the couplers after removing them from the torque tube, PERFECT condition. I've never seen any this good. Im replacing them with aluminum.
