7 quarts of Mobil 1 - Is that right?

People here argue over whether it is 6.5 or 7 quarts. Either way, though, you're gonna get charged for 7. Mine takes 7.

It actually holds 6 1/2. They still owe you 1/2 a quart. I would of demanded it! :lol:

It takes 6 1/2 with filter, but chances are they just dumped in all 7 quarts. I can see the "tech" saying.. :p:

ejs, GM re-designed the dipstick and dipstick tube for the '01 (and now including the '02 model) due to larger headers. Check any '97-'00 models and you will see that the '01 dipstick is about 4-6 inches further away from the firewall.
I really believe that they screwed it up...because the '97-'00 owners claim that 6.5 qts (with filter change) takes it right up to the MAX line on the dipstick. I know for a fact that when I drained my factory fill oil (at 1,300 miles) that I measured a tad over 7.0 qts. When I re-filled it with 6.5 qts ( do note that I lifted the rear up to ensure a complete drain) my dipstick only read halfway between the ADD and MAX...when I added another quarter of a quart for a total of 6.75 qts the dipstick then read one quarter quart low. I've left it at that....however, now after having put on about 950 miles my dipstick is reading just a bit over the ADD hole in the dipstick. That would mean that I've gone through about three quarters of a quart in 950 miles in three months (I will keep an eye on it). In any event, I think they screwed up on the redesign of the dipstick and won't admit. Now, I'm carrying a quart of Mobil One 1 in the car (wrapped in plastic zip bags) waiting for the DIC to tell me that I'm low on oil. But, I'll be ready for that infamous message.
I really don't drive her that hard and I rarely break 3 grand...but I mostly do stop and go driving on the weekends (she's a pleasure vehicle only).

It takes 6.5 quarts, but chances are they charged you for 7. If you ask, they will probably give you the extra half quart - my dealer did.

The engine was designed to contain 6.5 quarts of oil even though the new dip sticks do not read full at this level. Most dealers do not stock mobil 1 in bulk so if you got 6.5 quarts you would be charged for 7 since they would have to open 7 bottles. If they only put in 6.5 they should be able to give you the extra 1/2 quart if you ask for it. You may as well ask since you will probably need it.

Take your own oil and oil filter to the dealer. My Chevy dealer charges me only $10 to change it!!!!!!! :eek:

I think I will next time. That said I could but I didn't have time to buy the oil. I think my '01 A4 takes 0W-30 but the invoice says they put in 10W30.

In addition, I will tell them to put in only 6 1/2 quarts.

The total was $69. $11 was labor. I'm not sure how much Mobil 1 costs but I doubt it is the $7 something they charged me per quart.

If they did put in 7, what should I do?

ejs, if they put in seven don't worry about it because in all likelihood you'll burn off at least a half quart of oil within the next 2,000 miles. Like I said, I've burned about three quarters of a quart in 950 miles...but I'm going to wait and see if the DIC will tell me when I'm low on oil. My dipstick is now reading just a hair above the ADD mark (ADD hole does have oil in it).

For my 02 Z06 I changed the oil and filter at 592 miles on the clock 2 weeks ago before winter storage. After draining the oil with the back-end above the front I recovered approx. 7 qts of old oil. I also put in 6 1/2 qts and it did not read to full until I put the full 7 qts in it. Just a FYI on what I saw and did. :seeya
