Default Steering Position Sensor Codes

My 01 is giving me C1287 and C1288 codes (STPS bad). I tried cleaning the grounds as described in earlier posts, but to no avail. Where can I find a steering position sensor, is this a GM part only, and how expensive are they??

It would help GREATLY if you filled out your profile .... go to USER CP in the red/brown band at the top of this page and EDIT PROFILE ...

FILL IN WHAT YEAR and MODEL THAT YOU HAVE

SWPS ...

26055808 for 1997-1998 about $300.00
26058286 for 1999-2000 about $270.00
88965543 for 2001-2004 about $70.00

prices are GM MSRP (approx)

Thanks for the info, I'm lucky enough to have an '01, so $70 is worth a shot for the SWPS to fix these codes.

Its an interesting fix. You need to pull out the steering column to get at it.

When mine went bad several years ago, the replacement sensor was only $135 as the part by itself. It cost me $175 from the dealer to replace it. I elected to let them do it instead of doing it myself as I didn't want to chance setting the airbag off.
