Default Aftermarket 160 Degree T-stat doesn't fit opening

Hi,

a bit of a mystery...

I ordered an aftermarket 160 Degree T-stat from Zip.
It's made from MotoRad, ZIP PN PM-232.
It's an integrated housing/T-stat unit. (can't remove the T-sat)

I pulled the original housing/T-stat and it's 2 pieces, I can easily remove the T-stat.

When I try to place the new housing/T-stat, the two flanges, holding the T-stat in the housing, won't clear the opening in the water pump.

The opening is 1 7/8" but the outside dimension of the flanges is 2".

I called Zip and WCC, they both told me it's the correct part, it should fit. they sold hundreds of these, no issues.

I also brought the new T-stat to a local parts store to compare. They were both the same, 2" flange dimension.

I called a local GM dealer and they told me that there was only 1 model water pump for that year.

The water pump and T-stat are original, never been changed.

Can anyone help explain what the problem may be?

Thanks

Aftermarket MotoRad integrated Housing/T-stat.

I would say that you have the NEW pump design installed which would simply mean you but a T'stat and Not the integrated T'stat and cover.....

HTH
Would any T-stat for a 2004 work?

How could that happen?

I bought the car in March 2000, from someone who owned it for about a year. The service records did not show any water pump work/replacement. Would have been under warranty, should show up in service history.

I have owned the car ever since and not replaced the water pump.

How is it possible that a 1999 LS1 would have a pump/housing/T-stat that began to show up in production in 2004?

Pictures of the original T-stat

Yea you def have the newer style WP with the 2-piece therm and housing. That's actually a good thing. Now you can return the $50+ old style housing/thermostat and buy the newer $16 Motorad 160 stat.
How you have that new style pump is the question. If you didn't install it, the dealer may have done it when the previous owner had the car in for service. At least that's the only thing I can think of.

" Old" style (on bottom) vs New style (upper). Notice big pulley difference as well:

That seems to match the pictures posted in post number 2 of the link I provided in my post # 6 above. Not certain you can really tell which pump you have in all cases by the size/shape of the pulley........... JMHO
May be a one-year only deal on the '04 LS1s. The top pump in the pic is actually an LS2 pump in this case I believe. It not only has the smaller pulley and two-piece thermo, it doesn't have the (undrilled) flat-top casting boss to the side of the upper hose outlet, which was used for the upper hose on truck motors.

Yup, mine is definitely the upper pic with 2 piece T-stat.

I can't figure out how a pump which became available on an 04 was installed on my 99.......i bough it in 2000 with 900 miles on the odometer.
No service record of pump work, I didn't change the pump....the bolts on the pump are not marred, they look new, like they were never removed.

Maybe this pump was used on other GM vehicles in 99 and was mistakenly batched with the other pumps when sent to the Corvette factory?
