Default Jacking pucks?

Are jacking pucks really necessary when using jack stands?

I use my hockey pucks with my floor jack to prevent damaging the body panels, but I place my jack stands under the bulkheads of the engine center support frame or the center frame under the rear. I've never heard of anyone using the pucks and jack stands in combination.

If you're careful you don't really need them but they're cheap insurance.

It's easy to make the jacking pucks. Hockey pucks and eye bolts. I used them with my jack stands when I swapped my converter and diff.
