Default reverse 6 speed trans hard to get into

I have adjusted the shifter have not replaced the fluid yet,it seems like it does not have enough engaugement for reverse. If you stick it in reverse where you think it is in reverse and you have to push real hard to get reverse. Most times when you think you have reverse it grinds untill you push on the shifter hard.Any help would be greatly apprec.

Thanks mark
almost forgot it is a 98 vert 6 speed manual trans.

Does the car have a new clutch?

Reverse is typically difficult on older Corvettes, they uses a bronze blocking ring in them and they don't work very well. They wear easily too.

Well, you've probably got a Borg Warner transmission. If you change the fluid, do not use Mobil 1 ATF. The paper blocker rings inside will object highly. Now if the previous owner put that fluid in there... tear down time.

Might be the reverse lock out solenoid or the wiring for it. Mine was the wiring. The solenoid is on the top of the transmission with a 2 wire connector.

I would allinge the shifter FIRST before you do anything else or get too worked up... It made a big difference in mine althoug it's still easier to get in if I slide it into third first and then into reverse.

Just a FYI I find it easier for me to push the clutch down, go into 3rd the go into reverse, it does it better than if I were to just go straight into reverse.
