Default 98 6 speed manual trans hard to get reverse

i have adjusted the shifter, changed the trans fluild. It seems like the shifter needs to have more upper movement to go into reverse. It never clicks into reverse all other gears are fine,i have tried to put into 3rd gear before reverse same thing.I hate to try to lower the trans and see if there is something that i can see wrong, what about the reverse lock out when does that work?Any help ...

Thanks in advance
Mark

I used this thread to do mine. Had the same symtoms and it took a little force to go in all gears. After I did the alignment, it shifts smoothly with little effort in every gear. It took me about 5 or 6 adjustments but I finally got it. I swapped the transmission fluid as well. It is amazing how sensitive the shifter is even if it is just a mm here or there.

Agreed. Always do the shifter alignment first. Its easy to do and will fix most issues.

After driving this car the past few days I can get it into reverse if I FORCE it way right and push up hard,I have adjusted this shifter many times and it seems like no matter where i push it up or down nothing changes. You would think something would change like not getting it into first or second but it stays the same.

It sounds like your reverse electrical lockout may not be working. Without this, you must "overpower" the mechanical lockout. The electrical lockout is suppose to allow you to shift into reverse when under 5 mph, above that it locks you out.

i do feel the lockout at higher speeds only lets the shifter go so far, maybe i will try a new shifter beats removing the trans..
