Default Gas Cap Problems

I have an issue with my gas cap. I have an '04 Z06 and I'm on my second soon to be third cap. I replaced the faulty on with a new one from the dealer, but now I'm having the same problems.

The problem is I can take it off fine, but when I twist it to lock it down it just won't always lock in. The cap goes into immediate ratcheting mode as if it was tight!! Its really getting on my nerves!

Any and all assistance will be greatly appreciated !!! Thanks.

I'm ready for my third too.
Somebody must have a fix.

Ditto... cap problem just surfaced on my 04. Having to jiggle the cylindrical locking portion & the cap so it will release/reset/relatch. I expect a new cap is inevitable, but a wondered about a fix, too. JJ

Yep 3 here also for my 04. Another faulty Made in Mexico part! I finally gave up on the GM part and went to NAPA. $12 instead of 19 but it does not have the teather strap.

WOW, I haven't heard of this problem before ! Wonder if it is just with the 2004 Model ? I know the 2004 gas filter was changed to the new C6 type (filter in gas tank), maybe they changed the cap?

My 1998 has the original cap.

It must be an 2004 problem. I posted a question in the C6 Forum, asking if anyone had problems with their plastic gas cap. A few 2005's have already replied ! Some other years also replied.

Apparently 2005 C6's had a recall on the gas cap !

I can't keep a gas cap on my 2004 and neither my 2001 Z nor my buddy's 2002 Z have any problems what so ever.

Mine started to do this a few weeks ago on my 2004 Z06. Time for a new cap I suppose...

Does the faulty cap throw a code? I occassionally get a P0441 Evap Purge code and my cap rachets around too.

That is the code you would get from a gas cap not sealing

I did the same thing. Works just fine.

OP: Don't know why you're saying you have a problem. If you not throwing codes related to this, you don't have a problem.

Consider this. www.rockauto.com

8VETTE7:

Consider this. AC Delco part # GT276 $11.17 ea
Listed for '97 to '05 Corvettes.

Works great on mine.

Do a "flux capacitor" mod and this becomes a non issue!
