Several people in here have reported this with the earlier models. My son has my '99 and has also mentioned it to me. I suspect the hinges are simply wearing out but I have no proof of this, just speculation

Easy to test.
Swing the door open about one foot, grab the open door at the door handle area and lift up. Any hinge wear will be evident. Ideally, there should be ZERO play in the hinge(s).
My 42K mile 2000 has zero play – so far. I do lube the hinges three or four times a year.
Lesson here is to frequently lube the hinge pins.

Good note about the needed lube! My last car was a Camaro that was in pretty good shape, but the door hinges were neglected.
Now with my '04 I make sure I over-oil whenever I do my oil changes.
There is a drag bar below the lower hinge also, that runs over a wheel to give you that drag so the door does not swing wildly open and even has a detent to stop midway.
If you don't oil or grease that frequently the bar will saw through the wheel somewhat and creak and groan when you open the door. That's what happened on my Camaro, and it's hard to fix.
