Default What transmission fluid to use in my 98?

Ive been reading around and I know I need dexron 3 and that I cannot use synthetic due to the paper ring blockers, what I want to know is what brand most of you are running? What would you recommend I use? I would have loved to use royal purple but its synthetic so I cannot use it, right??

Contact forum member SUBDRIVER for a very good AMSOIL synthetic product that is compatable with your 98 Tranny. Or just use the latest non synthetic Dextron ATF.

DO NOT use Mobil 1 ATF.

You can use Amsoil ATD1G, I use it in my 1998.

I used Mobil 1 for about 50,000 miles and then I had problem shifting into 6th gear, it would grind. I tried several things, but it was fixed when I switched to Amsoil ATD. Now, after approximately 30,000 more miles, all is fine.

I had the same question about the 6 sp in my 99. I called the techs at Tremec and asked. They recommended Mobil 1.

I suggest that you call them. They were very cooperative and informative.

BTW, the 6sp in early C5s was manufactured by Borg Warner before they were bought by Tremec.

Call the manufacturer? Phooey.. There are more than enough oil experts on this forum, to reach a conclusion......on what is truly the best fluid.

I tried synthetic in my '98 ,it sucked.

Dexron III(like it says on the tag on the tranny)makes my Vette shift like it should.
It felt like the synthetic was too "slippery",and wouldn't let the synchros work like they should, but the el-cheapo Dexron works perfect, almost as if the tranny were made for it.

Go Figure...

Stick with Dextron III.

I put the synthetic AMSOIL in my '99 and three days later the front transmission seal started leaking 4-5 drops per day...

Take it from someone who's tried them all including custom blends on my '98. Most synthetics will damage the paper seal as they did mine (Redline). Stick with the factory recommendations and you will be very safe.

Thanks Bill.

This is the fluid recommended by AMSOIL for the 98 tranny (and the same one I use in my 02 which only sees track duty).
AMSOIL Torque-Drive Synthetic Transmission Fluid (Product Code ATD1G)

Yes, it happened to me...my '99 got a BorgWarner and I did not do my homework here on the forum first before changing the fluid to Mobil1. Big mistake on my part. It cost me a lot of $.

I have a '99 built close to the changeover in 1998. Does anyone know how to easily determine which transmission is in our cars?

The only real way is to look at the imprinted code on top of the transmission. If its a BorgWarner, it'll have a nice large BW on it. Tremec will literally say Tremec on it. My '99 was built in July of '98 and had the BorgWarner.
