Default 2003 starts but transmission shift won't engage

I messed up yesterday. Started 2003 Vette and must of activated VATS. At first the key wouldn't start the engine. Now engine starts but automatic transmission won't engage. Got towed home . Is there a quick fix or is it a trip to dealer? Any help would be appreciated

You either broke the press brake to release the gear shifter lever from the PARK position

OR

You broke the shift cable. Time to take the console apart and have a look see.

OR

Shell out $300-$400+++++ at the stealership.

Thanks Bill!!! I believe your right- it's the shifter cable. It will move out of park. Everyone should know how dangerous this was. If not for emergency brake I probably would have rolled backwards into a tree or a house.

Was the brake pedal not working either?

I just had the same problem last night in my 2004 LS1. I parked the car after going thru a low, grassy dry swale. Then went to leave and tranny won't engage at all out of the park position. My son towed me home, about three miles. The brakes still seem to work fine. Is there some kind of sensor/electrical connection that could have come loose? If the shifter cable has broken, can I look under the car and see it hanging down?
Thanks, Chris G.
