All three of my vehicles have been smoged recently and not once did the tech pay attention to anything mechanical.

Hooked up to the computer, did the test as fast as possible and he was done.

While I have no doubt people pass SMOG everyday with high flow cats, the truth is, if the test is done correctly..... they will not pass the visual.

Being lucky enough to get an (ignorant/ lazy/ apathetic) inspector, knowing someone in the SMOG business, and/or paying someone in the SMOG business to get a car to pass SMOG is really not the same as telling someone they can pass.

I realize I'm splitting straws here, but I'd hate to have someone think they are legal and then fail and get tagged at a SMOG test.

FWIW..........

I doubt they crawl under your car or put it on a lift..try and find a smog guy without a lift.

If you have stock manifolds...I'd say go for it.

You won't pass the visual if the tech does look underneath AND knows what the stock cats look like..I've yet to see a smog tech jack up a Vette to see if the cats are stock UNLESS you're running some crazy sounding motor

I have a stock LS6 motor and the HF cats did not pass. They have many races on them. You probably will pass if there new.

Cut an old cat in half and band clamp them around the high flow cats to the existing exhaust.

And most have no idea what the stock cats look like..they all look so different. If they don't for example realize that you're supposed to have pre-cats on a 2000...which most wouldn't.

It really is a crap shoot though, the stock cats suck. I swapped mine just for a little more sound, had nothing to do with horsepower...that and the fact that the long tubes deleted the pre-cats so at the time I figured why not.

Keep in mind that I did my LT's 4 years ago..beginning of 2009 or 2010 SMOG laws either changed or they really cracked down. I think both.

It's hard to even BUY cats that aren't CARB approved now...it's even harder to get someone to weld them on for you unless you have a buddy.

If I would have known it would be this tough to smog my car years later, I would not have done the long tubes.

Now that I have them, I'm just really careful at smog time and make SURE that everything is as stock looking/sounding as possible..I'm very friendly, play dumb and always get a referral.
