Default Adding high-flow cats to my longtubes, to pass VA emissions?

Hey everyone,

My 2000 corvette is vortech supercharged and has Texas Speed longtube headers, with O2 simulators. It also has a custom tune for this setup. If I want to add highflow cats to the exhaust system, is it correct to assume that I will have to get the car retuned? Also, will I have to buy new O2 sensors or wiring, since the car currently has 02 simulators? I need the car to pass emissions in Virginia! If you have any suggestions on types of high flow cats or anything else, please let me know!

Sincerely,
Jason M.

Where in VA? Besides Northern VA there are no emissions, just a safety inspection. Northern VA has tailpipe emissions.

If they test by plugging into your ECM you should be OK because the simulators fool the computer.....sniff test maybe not....click link below for some info..

I live in fairfax county, so emissions is required.

Thanks for the headsup. It seems like on newer vehicles the shop has the option to either do a test on the dynamometer or perform the OBDII test. Should the car actually pass if it is just an OBDII test, because of the O2 simulators?

If they do a visual - you'll want to have cats. Other than that, just make sure it's not throwing codes and you'll be fine. 02 sims are themselves illegal and shops stopped selling them a few years ago to avoid Federal prosecution. It's just much easier to tune them out.

The inspector asked me if there were any codes. I replied "None that you'll ever see."

My car passes every two years.

haha ok, thanks for the advice. I think i'll probably have the car retuned and cats added, just to be safe. Do you have any idea how much adding cats to a long tube exhaust system would cost?

Just as an example:

Not knowing whether you have an aftermarket X-pipe or what size it is - hard to be more definitive than that.

Call Robert's Custom Exhaust in Stafford - the very best in the area.

Ok great, I definitely will give them a call. The car currently has an h-pipe and 2.5" tubing. Do you think that retuning the car after adding catalytic converters is a neccesity?

Thanks again!

Since the cats will only cost you 2-3rwhp, I seriously doubt you'll need a retune.

If your car is tuned, and you aren't throwing a check engine light, you are fine. I passed with leaded gas in the tank. Haha.

If they do a tail pipe test (they shouldn't), you are screwed

I don't have any check engine lights, but if I use the onboard diagnostic system there is one current code and a few history codes. But these don't cause the check-engine-light to show up, so I should be fine?
