Procharger installed - car overheating now
Well me and my buddy installed the Procharger kit in his 2001 this weekend. The power is pretty awesome!! Unfortunately it is overheating now. The temp is 85 outside, the coolant just keeps climbing straight up to 270 where the car goes into limp mode. The fan is on and blowing. So it sounds like he needs to get a bigger radiator?? The core on it is pretty thin. Any thoughts?
Thanks
Wes

Re: Procharger installed - car overheating now (SomeDay)
I highly doubt you need a new radiator--they're pretty good out of the box...
How's the coolant level?--have you made sure all the connections are plugged in and sealed properly?
Is your coolant temp sensor functioning?
Any DIC codes?
Is the thermostat damaged?(clogged shut maybe?)
Something definitely isn't right...
Check the things above and get back with us...

The coolant level was fine. The sensor is working good, after it hit 270 the coolant started boiling over. All connections are good. We didn't touch the thermostat, but it was running around 200 degrees before the install. Maybe we'll try a 160 thermostat, see what it does.

Why don't you give Xtreme Motorsports a call and ask them what they think?
They should be familiar enough with the setup to suggest some solutions for you...
Good Luck

I'd like to know how easy it is to fit a BeCool or DRM radiator in with the ATI installed.
Something is wrong with your radiator/fan/thermo setup tho.

I'm not familiar with the belt arrangement for the mod. Is there any possibility that the water pump is not being driven correctly.? Backwards or not at all?

I had the same problem with my Z28 after my ATI was installed. A 160 thermostat and a reprogram to kick the fans on early was all it needed. That car never ran over 190 degrees after.

From what I have seen it is impossible to squeeze in a radiator any larger than stock into a ATI Supercharged car. Everything is a real tight fit in there after the install of the ATI kit.
I really do not like how the ATI kit switches to a single slightly larger fan rather than the dual stock fans. I had a feeling we would be hearing of ATI overheating problems in the warm summer months to come, especially in crazy temperature areas like Florida, Arizona and Texas.
However, hopefully I am wrong with my assumption and you find your problem to be caused by something else.

Re: Procharger installed - car overheating now (SomeDay)
SomeDay,
The common overlook when installing the ATI Procharger is making sure the wiring is correct on the fan that comes with the kit. If the wiring is reversed the fan will blow the wrong direction causing the car to overheat after driving the car for awhile. It sounds like you should check the wiring on the fan and make sure you are positive of which way the fan is blowing as it makes a big difference.
Try this and let me know if you have any other questions on the ATI Procharger set-up.
Hope this helps.
This is a very small detail that has commonly been overlooked, but this small detail could yield problems.

I'm pretty sure the fan is blowing the right way. Only other thing I can think of is the thermostat.

Does it get hot during normal driving or only when standing on it and running boost?
Have you AutoTap'd it?
If it only happens when in boost, check the A/F ratio and knock retard. Running lean will make it get hot. Retarding timing also causes combustion temps to climb.

Re: Procharger installed - car overheating now (Rx7Rob)
You better double check the fan direction. ATI had a run of fans wired backwards. I know this for a fact as my kit had one of these. The wiring was then reversed, problem solved.

That fan idea makes sense.
FWIW, I think Eikeland (sp?) fit a BeCool in there.
Anyone know if the DRM is thicker than the BeCool rad??
Guess I could try just an oil cooler..

I would definetly check the thermostat and at least confirm what the guys are saying about inproper fan direction. If you are blowing hot air through your radiator instead of pulling it through, I would tend to think this would heat things up very quickly.

Re: Procharger installed - car overheating now (Rx7Rob)
Just normal driving. We ran Autotap, the only time we got any retard (4 degrees) was when the coolant was at 240. Other than that it stayed at 0.0
I did feel hot air coming out of the fan, so I'm pretty sure it's wired correctly.

Drove mine back from ARE in Toronto, gauge read 192-194 all the way....Will keep my eye on it as it gets hot , as shawn posted, check the wiring, no way it should be that hot, even with a blower in the heat.. :)

Something is wrong with your radiator/fan/thermo setup tho.

Is it the intercooler or just warmer than normal intake temps?
