Default What's up with C5 windshield wiper motors?

Had one fail two years ago on my '98. Replaced it with a reman unit. Darn thing failed again on the very day I was putting it into winter storage last November. Said, "ah, screw it, I'll deal with it in the spring."

Failure mode: wipers intermittently activate by themselves even though wiper control in "off" position. The operate for a while, then halt at some random position, and then pick up activity again.

Went to buy a new wiper motor yesterday (Cardone part # 85-1019), figuring that the upgrade new version might be more reliable.

Uh, oh:

Autozone: out of stock on both new and reman units. Cardone has zero inventory, no promise date on additional units

Advance Auto: out of stock, mostly, except for one reman unit in one store (that I'm buying tonight... the motor, not the store )

Autopartswarehouse.com: out of stock nationally in 44 different distributors warehouses

Reman unit: $55. GM parts $340 list, about $220 via the various online vendors.

Any idea why a national shortage of C5 wiper motors?

Have you checked your udders? Also there are threads on repairing your wiper circuit board.

Yeah, I cleaned them out when I replaced the motor two years ago. I'll check them again. Even though I think they're clean, I wonder if they get overwhelmed when I run through the touch-free car wash. The failure last November was within one minute of leaving the wash.

Some people cut the tips off the udders to keep them from getting clogged.

snip an open hole in the bottom. Otherwise, in a car wash, they may not drain fast enough to avoid flooding the wiper motor.
