Default Coupe's removeable top creaks over bumps.

I was instructed by my dealerships technician to apply lithium grease to the latches contact points to eliminate a body creak. The symptom had started as a creaking noise from the front header when driving over a bump. The lithium grease was applied to the latches components that meet with the removeable top and only a small amount was needed and rubbed in well. This was a quick and easy fix to an annoying problem that had only recently started at 8,000 miles and will now be part of my periodic maintenance regimen. Guys, had the same problem and fixed it by placing some adhesive backed velcro on the windshield latch half (cut it to match the contour) and the problem has not reappeared. Believe the later model C5 verts come with this velcro from the factory...not certain, but believe I read it on this forum. Good luck with the fix...

Typically this is not a permanent fix. If you look at your driver or passenger side latch on the top itself you'll notice a flat silver plate on it. This usually gets torqued and bends upwards leaving a rather large gap b/w it and the latch itself. This is what causes that creaking. You can wedge something b/w it and the latch to alleviate it or get it replaced under warranty (if you still have it). Mine is getting replaced (AGAIN!) :mad :mad :mad

C54FUN: I did notice the Velcro on the 2002 Vert that was at the dealership while I was waiting for the technician but a 2002 coupe that was beside it didn't have it and the salesman had no answer. If this problem reappears that will be my next fix along with the Lithium.Thanks. For now it is as silent as can be. :)

C5Noir: I looked at the condition of my silver plates and they look as good as new but I will keep an eye on them as the miles go.Thanks :chevy

So you just put the fuzzy part of the velcro on the car frame piece or on the handle on the roof part?

Mine is squeaking too. 31k miles.

Thx!

My C4 came with velcro on the front edge of the removable top. My C5 is now also squeaking so I might give this a try. I'm not real sure, however, where you're saying to place the velcro. Thanks.

At the dealership the 2002 Vert I had seen had the Velcro on the silver strip located on the cars latching mechanism on the top of the windshield header on both sides.I didn't think to look at the folding top itself.I hope that helps because the noise can be irritating after a short while. :) Raul

To clarify, I placed the velcro on the windshield latch-half, not the top. I also agree with the comment about the latch gap, if you can't adjust it out, they have to be replaced. BTW my '98 has 28K miles and it started about 5K miles ago. Give it a try, what have you to lose.

I just took the top off my car and put the fuzzy velcro on.

Do you put it on the silver plate that is facing downward? I put a 3/4" strip at this location... let me know if this is the place! :D

The Velcro did nothing for me.

I put some on the windshield piece, but unless you cover the little wheel, where you put it won't have enough contact with the handle. Put it on the handle and the windshield wheel peeled it back and made a mess all over.

I removed it all. Moving to lithium grease or replacing the latches.

Interesting because I put the velcro on the latches and it worked. Maybe it will fade? We will see... :)

Maybe mine are worn out more with 32k miles.
;)

There is no contact between the metal on the windshield and the handle on mine except on the wheel and to the inside of the wheel. If you put it where the wheel contacts, the wheel will gunk up the velcro and make a mess.

Used some lithium grease spray from Discount Auto and it seemed to work!

Ya, I put it on the rear holding holes too.
I should know today for sure how well it worked as I put some miles on. Not a squeak in 5 miles last night and it was making noise like crazy every couple seconds before..
