If the head unit has been swapped out from a cassette deck to a CD player will the CD changer in the trunk still work when AUX is selected ? And if not is it likely just a dead CD changer in the trunk ?

It should still work. The 5 button on the display, though not marked, should advance to the next disc. I've done the same change on two C5's.

Ok. I can hear the disc changer cycling through the discs but none will play. I guess the player is dying.

Maybe you have the discs in upside down, or they are not recognized by the player. Try putting one professional disc in the changer and see if it plays. If the labels are the wrong direction, it will cycle like you say. It will always cycle through and read the discs before it starts to play.
