Default LS6 heads on a LS1 engine : what do I need?

Hi,

I have second hand LS6 heads I have decided to fit on my LS1 engine.

Could you please tell me what complementary parts I need to buy?
Which gasket, bolts or anything else I need?
Best place to order them and get them quickly sent?

And, do you think a tune has to be done after that?

I already had my engine tuned because I have LS6 manifold, intake, bigger injectors, and arh long headers.

Thanks for your help.

Well its always a good idea to have the heads checked out. See if the surfaces are flat, or if a valve job is needed, excessive guide wear, etc. You will want to put new valve seals on while their out. New valve springs, especially if upgrading the cam in the future. The valves themselves, retainers, and locks are generally fine to reuse. You will need new head bolts because the stock ones are torque to yield. So depending on how much you want to spend, you can get some ARP's and not worry about that again, or a stock set if you plan to leave them on. TrickFlow makes a nice set too for a decent price. Check out summitracing for most of these parts.

Intake seals: GM#12482063
Exhaust seals: GM#12482062
Trick flow head bolts: TFS-92010

Thanks!
My heads have been checked (surface). Two valves have been replaced and the springs are dual comp with only 8000 miles. No I will needs gaskets and bolts like you said.

Re-tune needed or not?

You will definitely need a tune. Without the o2 feedback during open loop, the computer reads the fuel tables from the pcm, and those will need to be changed.

also, I'm not sure if the pushrods are the same length, so I would look into that.

Depending on the miles, you may want to go ahead and replace the lifters.

I would also get some new exhaust manifold gaskets depending on if you previously used a crush gasket or if they are old.

I believe the valves on the ls6 heads were slightly longer requiring shorter pushrods.

Pushrods were the same. Valves were taller to make up for the smaller base circle of the cam on the LS6. If you don't have the hollow intakes and sodium filled exhaust that came on the LS6, I'm not so sure the valves are in fact taller. I believe the LS6 valves were .050" taller. With upgraded springs you should consider upgrading the pushrods also.

Assuming you still have the ls1 cam, from what kp1 said, with the taller valves you will need shorter pushrods.

Depending on what year your LS1 is, you may need new Valvle covers and coilpak brackets...and maybe sone simple PCV rerouting ;-)

man while your that far with the heads off i would replace lifters and trays and SERIOUSLY consider a cnc port job...if you're ever looking to make more power which seems like you are as you're upgrading now. when you're that far might as well do it right imo. i had a company called landspeed cnc my stock 853 heads (mike norris tuned my car and installed my cam and he uses them) and i'm 100% glad i did. you dont want to take them back off to do it later...my 2 cents

at a minimum I'd do lifters/trays and a rocker arm trunnion upgrade while in there, and a fresh set of sorings never hurt.

Wow ... There seems to be much more to do than I thought in the beginning!
I can't have my heads ported as they are in France now and I don't think there is any place that knows corvette ls6 heads enough to do the job.
I'm also wondering about changing the cam for a ls6 cam when I do the head change. That's not a big job then.

Getting ready to do the same thing myself. You'll need all new gaskets, fluids, I would recommend doing lifters and trays as well. I'll be going with LS7 lifters in mine. I am also doing a cam so I'll need more stuff than you. (Timing chain, ported ls6 oil pump, etc)

Lifters, 130
trays, 30
MLS 2001up head gaskets, 35(pair)
ARP studs or GM head bolts

Don't buy the old graphite gaskets, the MLS are cheaper/better and not a pita to clean the deck after cyl head removal

MLS? multi layer steel, 2001 was the change to MLS for the cyl. head gaskets

If your header gaskets are also MLS, reuse them, they will be good for years

www.partstaxi.com Kevin will get them to you fast

I'd also pull the valves and take a look at the valve guides and make sure none of the valves are bent

Soak them in GM top end engine cleaner or SeaFoam to get the carbon/gunk off them
