Take a quick look at the rubber/Viton? seal on your gas cap, most likely it's rotted and cracked.
The 100k C5's? just a WAG, with about a 250,000 produced, the vast majority are approaching the decade mark.
This may be a quick/solution to the gas vapor smell or avoid a PCM Evap code.

Murphy's Law made mine fail the day before I had to get the emissions done on the damn car.
Out of desperation, I coated the damn cracked O ring with Black RTV and put some celaphane wrap over the seating surface on the filler neck. Screwed the cap down tight and the next morning I removed the cap and the celaphane wrap. No more cracks and no more leaks no more codes!
Cap passed with flying colors. Its a TEMP fix but, hey,, it worked.
Steve
Do you have the any data/info on the correct O ring size for that cap?
Yes,,, I have see NUMEROUS caps with nasty cracked O rings. Now I can add mine to the list!

Are you sure it is Viton? That is one of the most expensive elastomers, due to its chemical resistance.

They go bad, gas caps are cheap, avoid PCM OBD2 codes, pass emissions tests, avoid gas vapors............spend time on the better things in life

Thanks.
Hope you're doing well Steve.
I swear, I'm going to bookmark your profile page and go through all the threads you start like this once I get back into a C5.

When I failed emissions a couple of years ago I just bought a replacement cap at AutoZone. It's not the greatest quality, it's hard to turn for clicks, but it works.
