cold air intake suggestions
I currently have a Granatelli cold air intake on my 2000 frc. I hate the "aftermarket" look. Which cold air intake system would offer the best flow and somewhat appear to be stock. I really dig the Vararam, but I have my doubts about how it works at lower RPM's. I think the Callaway Honker and SLP Blackwing are a nice piece too. Any thoughts? Thanks guys!

I had the Vararam but replaced it with the Honker. Better filter setup that fits whereas I had to silicone the filter into the Vararam due to poor fit.

I have read that they newer version of the Vararam has cured this. I am leaning towards the Honker, though. Thanks for the reply.

My two cents. Get a used Blackwing, modify the radiator shroud for cold air, pick up a used radiator shroud in case you ever go back to stock. Ask mehow i know.Nice winter project.

I got a callaway due to the fitment and quality.
The only thing I don't like is the intake box-maf coupler. It's made of rubber, but it's accordion tubing. I understand why it has to be there it just looks kind of second rate next to the rest of the intake.

FYI....it's pretty much the same effect and its a hell of a lot cheaper. Any aftermarket induction system that allows for outside am ambient air maximizes the effectiveness of the mod. Also that's an old pic. Now I have the Icebox covering the Blackwing which forces the outside air into the intake which is the same as the Honker.And what makes the Honker work, a filter with air funneled into the filter by a hole in the shroud. Now take a breath.... Not to get into a pissin contest here, but of course every now and then, someone gets his crotch stapled up when someone,anyone offers up an alternative. My way costs me $200 bucks and a couple hrs of work, your way costs $400+, or more if you paid someone to do the work(which is probably the case). Less cash, same effect,but of course at the end of the day, people install any mods that they want on they're own car.Im not knocking your choice,learn not to knock my choice or anyone else's. My way isn't the only way, neither is yours.

With your tuning software, you can datalog IAT while driving or racing. If the intake is truly cold air, the IAT will match the ambient air temp.
The Vararam was on my car when I bought it. So I'm neither a fan or detractor, but the IAT does indeed read ambient when the car is moving. I have no reason to replace the Vararam.
I did however do the silicone mod to a K&N filter made for a Triumph. Works excellent.

Seems the whole world's forgotten about the Hurricane. I just checked their site (WCC) and don't see it now. What a shame, it replaces your factory radiator shroud with a sealed double shroud of sorts so you don't have to hack your stock shroud to let cold air into it. Here's looking up from the ground.

When I was researching, IMO it was between this and the Vararam. I can plug my bumper screens at the track in hopes of maximizing the pressure differential across the radiator/OC without starving my intake for fresh air. Surprisingly, the air filter doesn't require cleaning every week like I thought it might given the layout.

While it not a true cold air intake (unless you modify the factory radiator shroud), the Blackwing is a nice improvement over the factory airbox. It installs easy, looks good, and works. Plus the price is reasonable.

Exactly. Same with the Haltech,Volant twin cone, K&N,etc. Making a provision in the shroud for cold air will make any of these work better,as well as added cooling to the engine compartment. The price for my Blackwing was cheap because I bought it used. I paid $125 and it looked like new. I modified the shroud with a sawzall and bolted a scoop on the front to "scoop" the air in. Went to a swap meet and bought a used C5 shroud for $25 in case I ever went back to stock. It was a cheap DIY project that works. NO codes, no complaints.

Thanks everyone for your input. I am still perplexed. I am really liking the "flip tie". Although, I really like the Vararam. Have they really improved their quality with the b2? From what I have read in the past, they were total pieces of ****.
