I haven't had mine apart yet but is there a way to modify the thermostat housing of a 97-03 corvette to make it work like the ones from the 2004 (which is the only way they ever should have made them in the first place)?

Just a replaceable thremostat or would it just be easier to buy an 04 housing and thermostat?
