Default 2000 brake module bad

Posting this to help out a friend.

He has a 2000 Corvette. He says he replaced a dead battery and it sounds like the brake light and/or traction control light on the dash stays on and he can't turn the traction control on.

He took it to the local Chevy dealer and this is what they emailed him:

2000 CORVETTE ELECTRONIC BRAKE AND TRACTION CONTROL MODULE, WITH JL4 ACTIVE BRAKE CONTROL +
PART #9376711 IS DISCONTINUED.
MODULE MUST BE WITH ACTIVE BRAKE CONTROL
2001 AND UP CORVETTE MODULE WILL NOT WORK

The dealer said they can't get a new part and they can't fix it. But they have found some places that can rebuild it.

Any ideas or experience with this problem?
