fuel additives / octane boosters
Just wanted to put in a quick plug for Klotz additives. We take our car on longer cross-country trips and not infrequently run into "low octane zones" where "premium" fuel is something like 89 octane.
We keep 5 one pint cans of Klotz Octane Booster on board just in case. One can typically treats a tank of "mouse milk" gas back into something resembling high octane. No more soft performance due to knock sensors de-tuning the engine...

what's in it?
generally people use toluene for octane booster. 2 gallons of it will raise your octane 3-4 points per tank. it turns 91 octane into 94 octane with the two gallon method
most over the counter octane boosters are toluene or xylene m mixed with small amounts of mineral spirits and diesel or transmission fluid.
the old home brew was 102oz toluene, 24oz mineral spirits and 2oz of dex3 tranny fluid to make a gallon
there's even a website here http://www.gnttype.org/techarea/misc/octanebooster.html that has the 5 most common home brews

In the Fall/WINTER, you can run lower octane fuel in most any performance normaly asperated vehicle without any performance issues.
That doesnt include all out track racing but,, lower outside temps allow you to use lower octane fuel under normal driving condition.
