I'd guess it was the clutch or throwout bearing dragging and not not allowing reverse to engage.

It would shift fine - just wouldn't go into reverse because of the wheel speed sensor. And if I'd replaced the pilot bushing when I had it apart to do the clutch I would be $2500 richer.

The wheel speed sensor has absolutely nothing to do with the reverse lockout. If that was the reason you were given then you were duped.

Indeed. That makes no sense

They probably gave the solenoid a good smack about $2495 later and didn't want to admit that's all it was..

I wonder if he means the VSS. If the PCM can't determine speed it may not allow the solenoid to change position. I could not find a DIC code for that in the tranny section but it would seem to be an explanation.

Could be, but the sensor would have to be sending a constant speed signal so the car thought it was traveling above 4mph when stopped, which is a very odd failure for a speed sensor which is basically just a coil of wire. Typically, when they fail they quit sending any speed info so the speedometer always shows 0mph and reverse can be shifted all the time.

But my premise was that the VSS was what was disconnected (not failed) and not a wheel sensor that was disconnected. If the PCM can't determine speed it might prevent energizing reverse. Just a theory to explain. I know a wheel sensor would not do it. The FSM was no help so I am trying the Sherlock Holmes approach.

Sort of what happens in a CL issue when the BCM can not determine whether the column is locked or not.

Your thoughts?

Sorry, I just reread your last sentence. Back to the drawing board. Dang it. You positive about going into reverse if the VSS has failed low?

Ya, when stopped there is no signal from the VSS, same as there would be if it was disconnected.
