Default Please help! Car will not go into gear.

My automatic will not go into gear. I press the brake to take it out of park and when it goes into gear it won't engage. The shifter will go into any position, just no results when I put it in any of the gears. it moves very freely in between gears(N, D,3,2,1) with no engaging. I am guessing the car is really in park because we tried to push it Saturday night and it wouldn't move. Any ideas of what it is or where to start looking for the problem? I'm praying it's not a tranny issue.

I read a thread a while back like this and as i remember is was something simple with the linkage under the shifter boot and console. It was either a cable or rod or bushing or something simple, I belive the post indicated they got the part to fix it at O'Rileys off the rack of assorted busings. Sorry I can't be of more help but I bet it is a simple fix. Google your problem and it will direct you to the corvette forum. The forum search has not been my friend in the past. Good luck, let us know what U find out.

It could be at the shifter or at the trans. The cable may have come of because a worn clip. Easiest to look at trans side first.

If I remember correctly it is on drivers side right above the pan. There will be a cable bracket and then you will see where it connects to an arm. Believe there is an electronic box on the arm also. Hopefully that makes sense. You will see it if you get down there with some light.

I think I found the problem. Now how do I fix it? I did a search and came up with nothing.

Not familiar with the Auto tranny but did look at the FSM and there does not appear to be a clip or other separate retainer to keep the connector on the ball stud. None shows in the parts book either. You may be able to reattach or it is broken and needs to be replaced.

There is guidance in the FSM also in case you replace it and/or you need to adjust the linkage. Without actual parts "in hand" it was hard to visualize doing it.

Got under the car and tried to pop it back on and it would go. I metal "washers that goes in the plastic piece feel off. I need to order a new one. Does anyone know the part number? It's a 2004 and all the parts I saw only went up to 03.

That flat piece on the nylon bracket pops up, it is the locking mechanism that holds that whole assembly onto the transmission lever. Pull it up, Since you think your trans is already in park, make sure your shifter is in the P position. Pop that flat section up, put end with the hole onto the shift lever, then pop that flat section down, you should hear it snap on.

I think he is going to need to get a new linkage piece. It may work for a while but I think it is going to come off again. It has NO serviceable parts shown in the parts manual or FSM that I saw.

I bought the ATF Speed replacement kit and installed it. Now when I'm in park and shift to reverse I have to put it to where it says "n" for the reverse to to engage. when I want it in neutral I have to put it in "d". It feels a little loose and I can move the shifter up to where it looks like it in the right letter for the gear. How do I fix the problem so it's not like that.

I know this sounds confusing
