Default A/C question

My 2001 C-5 has 24,000 miles on it. The A/C charge is good, no codes are shown on the DIC. Usually, the A/C works well, and blows strong, cold air. However, the last month or so, every once in a while, when I switch on the A/C, it emits a loud, "gurgling" sort of sound from under the hood, and one time, it appeared to puff a little smoke, or possibly steam, I couldn't tell. The time this happened, I was in traffic, stopped at a light, and by the time I could pull to the side of the road and pop the hood for a look, the steam/smoke has dissipated.

Anybody have any ideas what to check? TIA!!

Would have someone turn it on while you watch with the hood open and see if problem is in the belts.

That's a thought. I'll have to drag my wife out to the garage in the next couple of days, so she can hit the switch while I watch....

Update....

I bought a Drier and orifice filter tube, and took the car to a trusted mechanic. Turns out the pressure in the high pressure side of the system was a little high, and there was air in the system. We evacuated the system, installed the new parts, re-charged it, and it appears to be A-OK now....

Very good. I was going to suggest to have the wife under the hood and go for a drive and find out what she saw.
