Default Whining Noise that Increases with acceleration

Hello gents,

A few weeks ago I started to notice a slight whining noise coming from the front of the car.

The noise increases with acceleration, clutch pedal to the floor in neutral, car stop you can here the whining, 1st-6th they all whine again under acceleration, you are cruising in 6th 70-80 mph and you here the whining noise, constant.

Car stop clutch pedal push to the floor, the noise goes away.

I fail to mention before it seems to me that the noise just keeps getting lauder and lauder the more I drive the car. Is it safe to drive?

The car has 80k miles on it.

I leaning towards the Throwout bearing, but not sure, any one has a clue to what it can be. I't can't be differential since the car makes the noise when the car is stopped also imho.

I started reading some threads on the forum and noticed that some members experienced something similar with the rear end, drive shaft and so on.

When I bring the tranny down I plan to replace all the wear components on the drive line also, but I want to make sure I'm certain about the issue

Your input will be a blessing,
thanks in advanced

You should first check the front wheel bearings. Lift the front wheel off the ground and with your hands at the 6 and 12 positing see if you can wiggle the wheel. As the bearings get worse you will be able to hear an audible clicking sound.

Shouldn't be a wheel bearing if it does it when the car is stopped.

So the noise goes away when stopped and you push the clutch pedal to the floor ( I was a little confused by your description)

Otherwise the noise is a constant whine that changes with engine rpm?.

Are both those statements correct?

If it were the throwout bearing, it would probably make more noise when the clutch pedal is pushed in and not usually a whine.

Maybe the pilot bearing, but they are usually silent killers that don't complain until they die and take innocent components with them.

So, if the whine is engine rpm-related, I think you might want to start at the front of the car and eliminate the idler and tensioner pulleys, the alternator, the power steering pump, and all such items that spin when they are connected to the serpentine belt. So, take both belts off, the serpentine and the AC belt and start the car up. If the noise is gone, you are down to 7-8 things. Then smarter guys than me here can help you . If the noise is still there with the belts off, then you need to be prepared to send some serious bucks....

Hello K,
Yes, both of your statements are correct. I think I should rev the engine in neutral also and see what happens.

I will tackle the belts tomorrow, I also got a mechanical stethoscope today after work to listen to the components running.

Thank you so much K.

Did you check the fluid level in the power steering pump? That pump likes to whine . Most everything else up front squeals or makes little popping sounds. Don'T forget the harmonic balancer. IT usually does not whine, but you never know

Hello K,
Just got done checking all the pullies in the engine. I removed both belts and started the car, the whining noise still present. I revved the engine a few RPM's and it still makes the same noise.

You accelerated the car a few RPMs? The car rotates?

Are the tires moving when the car rotates?

The sound gets louder with acceleration of the car? Or the engine?

Maybe you're talking that you revved the engine, and the sound increases with engine speed?

Please be specific about your wording. Cars don't accelerate to RPMs...

Hello Trios,

Yes, I revved the engine and the noise increases with engine speed. I got under the car and using a sthetoscope I notice that the sound was louder around the bell housing area.

Default Whining Noise that Increases with acceleration

Hello, I have an Auto C5 1997. Lately I've noticed it having a light whining noise when I accelerate and it isn't every time I accelerate but its about 70% of the time. Can anyone tell me what could be going on? Thanks
