Obviously a shorter ratio will lower your time, but at what point do you end up making your gearing so short that another shift is required to complete the 1/4 mile?
Im assuming most gears will finish in 3rd? I have a 2.73 ratio right now, so will switching to 3.42 still allow me to finish in 3rd?

Yes you should finish in 3rd and 3.42's are a good choice. How tall are your rear tires?

I'm in the same boat, ready to upgrade from 2.73. I tried to order RPM Stage II diff with 3.73 couple weeks ago but they had no 3.73 gears and no ETA from mfg. Seriously considering 3.90 vs. 3.42. Even with these gears should remain in 3rd gear unless you start making huge HP. Waiting to order tires so i can alter effective gear ratio slightly if needed.

use an mph/gear calculator
OR
if it's a street car just rob a rear end from a z06 and enjoy the improvement. don't think i'd want anything deeper than a 342 on a street car even though guys do go 373 and 411, it kills mpg
