Sparco Steering wheel NRG hub adapter and quick release install
I recently got a great deal on a sparco steering wheel. To continue in a budget minded fashion, I skipped the fancy quick release and went with an NRG 2.0 quick release, and finally their SRK-170H steering shaft adapter.
The srk170-H shaft/hub adapter works great. It fits perfectly inside the factory steering column plastic. NO TRIMMING REQUIRED! It fits such that for the first couple days, there was slight grinding of the inside plastic caused by the hub adapter rotating inside when i turned the wheel. But after the initial break in, its great. Could not ask for better luck here.
I used an oreilly rental tool with the j legs and it worked flawlessly to remove the steering wheel, which seemed exceptionally light without the airbag. the sparco is heavier than the factory wheel minus airbag. But then theres the quick release and and hub adapter. I am definitely increasing net weight here.
Most time consuming part was figuring out how to loosen the red wire in white plastic tube haha. just turn it! Once I got the NRG hub adapter on the steering shaft, I pushed a conductive 1/4" x 2 1/2" bolt wrapped in electrical tape into that hole. The tape keeps it from grounding out on the steering hub adapter as it pokes up through a cut hole (different than the predrilled 5/16" removal holes) I wrapped a 3" wire lead to this and attached the other end of the wire to the base plate of the quick release where there is a small electrical plug connector. Then I bolted that base plate onto the steering shaft adapter. I used a couple folds of electrical tape on the bolt head to act as a shim so that the plate would keep pressure on the bolt. Then I wired the factory sparco button to the leads in the NRG quick release that bolts to the steering wheel. horn works flawlessly!
Now, when I placed my order for the quick release, I thought I was going to get red with a gold ring. Well, thats not what I received. The distributer seemingly sent the wrong one and I ended up with red and green. It would look great in a car show in december... anyway they offered me a partial refund for the error which i accepted. I don't want to deal with renting the puller again so I could remove the nrg adapter and install the stock wheel for a couple weeks while shipping this one back and forth. for now this will have to do. Theres a powder coating shop right next to where I work so that may eventually happen if I ever start DDing my mustang again.
If you have a pretty deep dish wheel you likely wouldn't need a quick release. I tried to see if i could just bolt the wheel right to the hub adapter, but with my non dish steering wheel my fingers hit the blinker/wipers.
Let me know if i missed anything. Im happy to answer questions but this is doable by anyone! everything can be returned to stock quickly. No regrets! save the wave!

I also removed my NRG quick release and just using NRG hub adapter and 1" spacer. Since I have short legs, the steering wheel ended up too close for me as the quick release is taller than 1".
If anybody is looking to buy one, I can cut you a deal on mine. Barely used, see pics above.

My car is still down so I haven't had time to drive it. But I think I was 325$ in the whole swap. I didn't put the resistor in yet so I'll do that later when I get the car going. I got the button wheel because of my boost controller so I have a momentary switch that's easy to hit that'll put the boost controller at max psi

Bumping an old thread but this was my biggest concern, I adjust the wheel as far back as it goes currently(opposite problem Ill just say "long arms")...other than that I am ready to ditch the bus wheel...I would probably go with the thin quick release which is about 1" according to NRG. Any other opinions? Still probably worth it I am sure!

Does anyone know if you remove the clock spring before the NRG hub adapter goes on? Some of the videos I watched on YouTube don’t mention it. do you pull that airbag wire out? I really don’t want the SRS light so just trying to figure that out. Any help is appreciated
