Default Help Me Identify My LS1!

Hey guys, this is my second thread here. I'm trying to find my way around regarding 'vettes and the LS1. I've searched around online to try and figure out casting numbers regarding engine years. I'm really new to this stuff, please help me out here guys!

The former owner said his friend from Detroit, MI owed him money. To pay him back, his friend would drop in a newer, lower mileage engine. I asked the guy what year the engine was and he wasn't sure. It's got ~35K-40K miles on it.

I would really like to know what year the engine is in there.

PS: The rest of the C5 is definitely a 1997, and I made sure by checking the VIN number.

You would have to check the block casting number to be able to figure it out for sure. You will NOT be able to tell exactly any other way.

Is your oil pan a ONE piece or two piece pan?? That will let you know if it is a 2000 and above if its a two piece pan.

If the batwing portion has screws in the lower section, its a two piece pan.

Okay! Thanks a lot honestly. I really don't know how to get back there and look at the back of the engine. That chart is good stuff though.

According to some people on another thread of mine regarding a small issue I had, my engine has two metal-braided fuel lines going into it. This renders my block to be a 97-98 motor right?

If so, how would I tell the difference between a 1997 motor from a 1998 motor? Thanks a bunch yall.

NOT TRUE!!!!!!!!!!!!! You can install a 2004 block and heads and use the early intake manifold and fuel rails and never know the difference.

GET THOSE NUMBERS!!

That is also why I ask you to examine the oil pan. Though its not 100% identifiable (installer could have installed your OLD pan on the new block, but I highly doubt it) If you have a removable lower pan section,,, its a 2001+ engine.

Maybe these pictures will help? They may give clues to some of the more experienced users here who know their stuff! I wish i knew how to get back there, but I don't know how to check it all back there without taking out parts, etc. I will check out the oil pan sometime! I should pop car up sometime soon.

That was including yall too!! I'm just saying it from a broad/general perspective.

I'll try and get 'em. Is that a number on the passenger-side head?

yes The plastic fuel rail covers that have CORVETTE in red... pull up on them and they just POP off..it takes a pretty good tug...
the one on the drivers side you just have to work the fuel lines through the slits in the cover... the passenger side just take off the oil cap... it's the easier of the two to take off, if you want to start with that one to get an idea of how they come off...

Okay, thank you! I'll try and get to that some time soon and report back. This has truly been one of my busiest summers, so forgive me for being a slow-poke around here!
