Default Where to buy '99 BASE shocks.?

I need a new set..I see lots of ZO6 shock deals, but my car is a base model FE1 suspension. I think maybe the Z's are not what I want.

I don't plan on changing my suspension, and I read in the threads that the Z shocks are gonna provide a rougher ride, plus it's said they don't really match my bars and spring rates..(man, I learn a lot on this forum).

Anyway I kinda like my car orig. So, any other sources for a new Base set ?

checked a couple "cheap" GM parts sites..wow man they're over 4 bills a set.

Post in the for sale/wanted section. there are tons of guys that made the upgrade to Zo6 stuff and would probably part with their old shock cheap. I just a few weeks ago threw mine in the trash. They had 31k on them. Rod

I had base model 99 with 47K miles when i replaced them with 2011 Z06 shocks. Mine rides smoother now. I just did a friends 97 with base and he loves the way it rides. Not harsh at all and much better than before.

Go to Rock Auto and buy the AC Delco C6 base shocks for about $200 a set if you just want a cheap base model shock. Try looking for a 2010.

FYI, the C6Z shocks ride is pretty good so that's not really a problem despite what you may have read.

Rock Auto's FE1's are $114.99 apiece. Hell bilsteins are cheaper than that.

I checked it out rock wants $245. all 4 shipped.

What is the opinion for the best ride overall on a base suspension, would you go for the Z's vs the softer shock..? I drive in the real world, no track or racing just plenty of ruts and speed bumps where I live. I read the Z shocks would raise the car slightly. Not a bad thing in my case. I know the Z's are $299. shipped.

I really appreciate the info and opinions.

If you're around the stock ride height then the base model shocks would be fine. If you are lowered then the Z shocks might be a better choice. A little stiffer means they would travel a little less and tend not to bottom as easy. Still, either shock probably won't make that big a difference.

Having a hard time deciding, but anything I do is gonna be night and day from what I have.

It's an embarrassing story to admit, but I've had my beast a year and not replaced the shocks..

I've had to sink a ton into bringing the drivetrain and a few other issues up to par, well times flies and I'm still rolling on the orig 200K+ shocks. Holy Cow..I guess it's a testament to the design of the C5.....Hey the car still rides better than my C4's..

Luckily my motor is recently freshened and my A4 has only got 3000 mi on it. So new shocks, Z's or Base, will make my car feel like a new one..

decisions, decisions..

At 200k they're likely more of a pogo stick than a shock. I meant either new shock won't be that much different to the other one, not new vs your old ones which should be a very nice improvement.

Saxy, I went with Cultrag Performance's package.
Believe me, Gene Culley has a package of shocks that are GREAT.
Go to the General Forum and look at his ad.
I put them in my Coupe, and couldn't be happier.
all for shocks for $294.94

At one point soon I have to make a choice. Z06 shocks on a base suspension ??? or stick with the factory spec FE1 shocks.

What would the EXPERTS recommend?? Price is pretty close between the 2 so I could go either way...

probably the stock shocks. if you use a shock with more compression and rebound in the curve like the z06 shocks it can make the initial turn seem firm them get loose since you have a little more resistance in the shock but not the springs

gm did the suspension on the c5 really well and if you know what you're doing it can be tailored to your preference. if you just buy parts to buy parts like some people do, who knows what you will get

OK I DID IT....I've taken the advice and ordered the 2010 FE1 base shocks from Rock Auto.

Looking forward to the new ride.

..well gentlemen I got 'em installed, wasn't cheap but I got to watch them do it..lot's of work fer sure.

Nothing special shock wise I know.. just what GM designed, but man freaky difference. I'm impressed. I only drove it home from the shop and I'm getting ready for an afternoon cruise in Vegas.

Glad I didn't go too stiff, I can still feel the pebbles.

Gene kudos to your great products..!
