Default Time for New Rotors and Pads, thoughts?

Got an '01 Z51 in need of 4-wheel Pads and Rotors.

General spirited driving no track time.

Any tips or tricks, lessons learned?

Preferences or quick upgrades?

Anything to triple check look for while in there?

Much appreciated!!

I ran into Dick Guldstrand many years back when I first bought my Vett. I asked him about improving the brakes on a 2000 coupe. He said that the brakes on the C5 didn't need any improvement for the street, and in fact he said they raced their Vett with the stock brake rotors. He said you can possibly improve the pads but going exotic wasn't needed. Rod

A lot of people here swear by the NAPA rotors...

Wow, that's all good news, wasn't looking to do any major BBK swaps nor felt it was needed so good affirmation on that.

Any tips on Rotors, stock vs vented vs slotted etc?

Pads ceramic vs hard aggressive etc?

Its all about tradeoffs. For some it is important to not clean wheels every other day. Others want to have the best stopping performance at all times. Opinions will vary greatly on this and you have to decide what is important to you. Running a decent rotor with ceramic pads will provide adequate stopping performance although far from being the best.

Been running Baer Eradispeed for many years now, along with Hawk HPS pads. No complaints - except now I have 18/19's they look a but small.

Guess it depends on just how long those "spirited" runs last and how hard you go at the corners on the "street".

I track a little (green/yellow groups) and am using Centric Premium rotors and Hawk HPS pads, also on the street - I know if/when I get faster I'll need better pads but these are working for me right now both track and street. IMHO about 50% less dust than the HP+ pads.

No personal experience as I run solid rotors, but lots of posts on here about drilled rotors cracking easily on the track, but seem to work fine for street or spirited street driving from what I've read. Hopefully someone with more experience will chime in...but they do look

I added stainless brake lines as well, and now with it all apart you may want to consider the popular mod of painting the calipers now if you haven't already...

I've had these on all four wheels for a year and a half and they're great. Many forum members use them.

A good value is the Centric premium rotors and pair that with the Carbotech 1521 brake pad and you are good to go....

Carbotech™ Bobcat 1521™ The Carbotech Bobcat 1521™ is our high performance street compound that is our most successful compound. The Bobcat compound is known for its awesome release and modulation, along with unmatched rotor friendliness. Like our AX™ & XP™ line of compounds, Bobcat 1521™ is a Ceramic based friction material offering minimal rotor damage and non-corrosive dust. Bobcat 1521™ offers outstanding performance, even when cold, low dusting and low noise with an excellent initial bite. This compound’s virtually perfect linear torque production provides incredible braking force without ABS intervention. Bobcat 1521™ operating range starts out at ambient and goes up to 900°F. Bobcat 1521™ is suitable for ALL street cars, perfect for your tow vehicle, police cruiser. The Bobcat 1521™ compound has been found to last two-three times longer than OE pads you can purchase at a dealership or national retailer. That’s one of the beauties of Carbotech Ceramic brake compounds. Bobcat 1521™ is NOT recommended for any track use.

Front 1521 $140 Rear 1521 $120

I went with the NAPA rotors at replacement time. The front NAPAs warped around 10K miles (street ceramic pads) and the rear are now warping at the 40K point. I had been very happy with the performance of the OEM rotors and found them from one mail order source at a price just slightly higher than the NAPA rotors. I made sure they were made in Brazil as my original OEMs were. I replaced the front NAPA rotors when they first warped and have been happy since. Now time to replace the rear NAPA.

Default Time for New Rotors and Pads, thoughts?

I have run ceramic pads for past 100k miles with no problems. I never think about them. I am just an ordinary guy who runs his c5 on the highway and in town, spirited or not but wanted clean wheels for a change.

I installed this kit on my brothers 2001 a year ago. Stopping power much improved over stock and has held up well to multiple very spirited canyon runs.

I have these for sale. You can get for cheap. And a good way to try a big brake set.

Been running Brake Motive rotors for almost 4 yrs now. I tried the pads they gave with the kit but wasn't happy with the dust they left behind. Changed out the pads to AC Delco Ceramics and I have been a happy camper ever since. Even the Zinc Plating on the rotor hats are still holding up

My car is a street car that sees spirited driving & occasional autocross. I use GM rotors with GM Z06 pads. The fronts create a fair amount of dust but have great bite for street and autocross usage.

Default turning rotors

How many times can you get away with turning the OEM rotors, btw?

looking over the invoices from the past owner, he has replaced the front pads twice, and turned the rotors both times. The rears he has done twice, the first they were turned, and the second, the tech said they were 'too rusted', so they replaced. (Everything he done was at the dealership).

When the time comes, I can get the rears turned, but I am not sure if there is enough metal to turn the fronts. Actually I don't know how much metal needs to be left.

Can I turn the fronts a third time?

All depends on how much material is left on the rotor. Rotors are usually stamped with a minimum thickness allowed measurement. If your close already to the minimum thickness most places will not turn them.
