Can you change the ring and pinion from 3.42 to 3.90 w/o modding the case?
WCC tells me NO. Another shop(Andys Auto) tells me YES. They said if I have the 2.73's it must be modded but with a current 3.42 the 3.90's will go right in? They also said they did it to a forum members car. Are we being duped by the Vendors into spending more than we need to? I can order the ring and pinion for $400 and I got a quote from my tranny shop to do the change for $400. That's $800 for gear swap out the door. A pretty substantial savings over the $1700 dif exchange plus $400 labor to do the swap.

The answer is YES - you can swap the gears (you just need new seals, shims, and bearings). I am the forum member you are referring to........ :D

there are two cases for the C5 carrier... and only 2.
the one used for the 2.73... and one for all the others. Are you sure they aren't tralking about the reinforced "shaft" inside the case?

So I guess with the new seals and shims and bearings it will put the cost up a bit but still WAY under $2000.

If you have a 3.15 carrier to swap you can get it for way under $2000, closer to 1/2 of that. Not worth the hassle of trying to rebuilt it yourself. I did the math & end up buying one from Andy. :D

The bearings, seals and shims are roughly $150. You can get a set of 3.73s cheap but if you wait until december the 3.90s and 4.10s should be dropping in price.

BTW I am installing a set of 3.90s in a 42 carrier later this week.

2.73 case is too weak and small for the bigger gears and torque. I've not heard of anyone using that case.
