Trans/Diff Leak?
Not a Corvette owner (yet), but I went to look at a 2004 yesterday. Drove fine, but examining what I could of the undercarriage with the car on the ground, there was what appears to be an oil leak of some sort in the rear. There was black gunk (oil and the grit it picked up) on the bottom of the subframe, and a little bit on the exhaust bend that's right behind it. I couldn't get a look at how far forward the gunk went, but my initial thought would be that it was diff fluid, because it wasn't red like trans fluid. However, I could be wrong. Obviously I won't be buying until I can get a look under the car with the it off the ground.
Is this a common failure point at C5 transaxles, and what's the typical solution? Thanks!

Here is a link to a thread about diff leaking. This should give you a ideal of what you are looking for.

Good luck with your purchase and this could give you some leverage in negotiating your final price.

May be the differential breather check valve stuck building up pressure and leaking out seal. Mine looked similar, I cleaned it up and fiddled with the check valve and no problem since then. Check valve is on top of rear end hard to get to and to even see. I have read that GM overfilled them origianlly as well. Good luck

I'm seeing the same problem with my 2001 with only 18K/miles on the clock.

Do the search it shows what to do. It can b removed but it takes some effort. The post suggest popping top off of vent remove seal and spring and slip a piece of rubber hose over vent and put in a ball check valve on end of hose and attach it at a high level so no water can enter it. Again google it

I took my 98 into the dealer because a small repair shop thought they saw fluid leaking from the rear. I have a manual trans. There were no spots in my garage.
Dealer said it was over flow. I hadn't changed the fluid in like 5 years so I had the fluid changed. Trans sounds and runs a lot better now. Imagine going to the dealer and not spending ton of cash.
