part or item fell out of steering column
Hi there, Asking for help from anyone that knows steering tilt mechanisms well. I was removing the instrument cluster and tilted the steering wheel down to remove the cluster when this small item fell out of the tilt area.
I don't know if it belongs to the car or not? I cannot find anything that looks like it in the FSM pages relating to the tilt mechanism. It is about the size of a dime, and about 3/8" long. Oblong a little. And for all the jokesters I know that the item on the left are pliars.
Can anyone identify and tell me if it belongs in the steering column somewhere or not?

It's a small alignment type shim or spacer used during assembly/mounting of the steering column support to the dash structure.
Your steering column may have been out, removed or (more likely) unbolted or lowered at some point in the past and it fell out. It is NOT critical. Unless you want to do a panel removal and unbolt your steering column support and lower you steering column to put it back in place, just chunk it. No biggie.

I know, I know, it "looks" different in the little drawing, but that's where it goes.

The kind of odd thing is, there's only ONE used per car. Like I said it is NOT a critical item. My thinking is it's an "assembly line" thing when the car was being built at the factory.

LoneStarFRC you rock!
Thanks!!!! It makes perfect sense now. I was doing exactly what you said it would take to make it fall out. I was trying to replace a burned out bulb in the DIC with new LED lights, tilted down the wheel, and that little bugger fell out. It was bothersome, and now I know what to do with it. I am having trouble though with the LED lights that were sent to me being too big to fit through the PC board of the DIC switch. Working on that with the suppliers to see if it can be remedied. Don't think it can though.
My car is a 1999 red FRC. Shure have fun with it! Thanks LoneStar!

Thanks for the info. Have never seen a piece like that on my car, but if I ever do, I'll know where it came from.
