Here are some threads that talked about push button start capability on the C5.

Cars with Push Button Starters have a whole different security system intergrated into the FOB system. The FOB has to be within a foot or so of the dash to satisfy the START ENABLE circuits.
In your case, you would still need to insert the key, turn it to ON and then PUSH the BUTTON! Other wise, anyone could get into your car, push the button and BYE, BYE

In new vehicles using push button starters the fob must be within a certain range of the vehicle, many times it can't be outside the car, it must be within the car's interior. In Infiniti's you can hold the fob outside the windows and it won't work unless you move it to the inside of the glass. On Hondas you can have the fob outside the door and the pushbutton will work.

Safety Car
The range on my '98 has aged so that it's about right, if the fob in passive mode is kept in the middle of the house then the car remains locked in the attached garage and the fob won't unlock it. The system includes a hidden switch in the car to select normal, high security (no start when unlocked) and on for service. The ignition switch was replaced with four small solid state relays so there are no power contacts to wear out but the dash voltmeter reads a little low due to the slight drop across that relay. I used a single button with timers instead of the three button GM switch, it fits the round ignition switch hole in the dash and is easier to use. What's nice about the C5 fob is that it programs easy by holding two buttons for a few seconds and if the fob battery dies the key can unlock the door allowing the car to be started. Some of the new GM cars won't start if the fob battery dies so a spare battery should be kept in the car and the learn steps are more complicated however they do provide remote start. My newer GM car wouldn't start after sitting for half a year, some chipmunks moved into the engine area and chewed through the communication wires (smart chipmunks); when the start button was pushed the car wouldn't start.
