Transmission problems.. rebuild/replace/trade it in?
Hey there, first time posting here so direct me in the right direction if there are already threads covering this...
I have a 2000 hatchback automatic trans, and on my way home from work I lost everything above 2nd gear.. 1st and 2nd work fine but when it comes time to shift into 3rd it shifts and might as well be in neutral...
Noticed a slight slip the day before it happened but never any problems before that. Planned on getting it up on a lift to check the fluid but didn't quite make it that far.
What I'm looking for are some suggestions on where to go from here. Best place to get an honest rebuild done in the Hampton Roads area that maybe won't cost $3,000.00? Or somewhere to get a good used transmission. I can handle the R&R myself, but I don't want to attempt a rebuild. Gary's Transmission quoted me about $2,600 and I found a place called Free Miles Transmission that said they'd do it for $995. Problem is Gary's is a little out of my price range and the 995 place has a F rating with BBB and a ton of horrible reviews for their work so I wont be going there. Trying to find some compromise between those two hoping someone here has some insight on this. Any help is appreciated so thanx in advance!

3-4 clutch is likely gone. There are companies out there that sell rebuild kits. I wouldn't take it to the cheap guy. It's took much work to have someone half *** fix it.

You would think that a CORVETTE Transmission would be pretty much bullet proof BUT,, that is FAR FAR from the truth.
There are a PILE of 4L60E reliability issues and a BIGGER PILE of up-grades that are needed to get the transmission more reliable when they are rebuilt.
Here is what your problem most likely is:
Unfortunately, Many of the shops that can repair them only repair them and do NOT do all the necessary up-grades.
There are several Forum Member Trans Specialist that you should be contacting to find out what options you have and how much a PROPER rebuild will cost. I strongly recommend calling them and discuss your issues and what they can do for you.
My go to trans shop is: RKT56 Call and speak to Rick Kim.

Discuss your issues with Rick and what you need done. He is one of the best guys around. He is not too far from you although not close either.

A stock rebuild without upgrades will get you back to where your tranny was before. If you have a stock motor and don't plan on changing that, and don't abuse the tranny, it should be fine. Keep in mind chevy put these tranny's in 4x4 trucks that when loaded to their rated capability weighed twice what the vette ways, and when towing to their rated capability were pushing around well over 4 times the weight of your car.

Super Chevy magazine had a nice article in their December issue on 4L60 performance upgrades for different power levels. Here's a link to it:
