Default Wilwood W6A caliper question - tstar ??

Working with Todd at TCE on a front brake upgrade for a 99 C5 with C6 18x8.5 +56 OE 5 spoke wheels.

I will be running the 14 x 1.25 OE Z06 disc.

Todd knows that this set up has been sold to board member, but only could remember Bill C who helped with the mock ups.

If anyone is or has run this setup, I would appreciate knowing which wheel was used and if my current wheels will clear.

Here are the wheels.

Was Bill D. Bill Dearborn; you have any experience with these wheels?? Or others as there are ample kits out there in the market. I just don't know the wheels so much.

Here is the OE 14" x 1.25" rotor filling the wheel. After looking at the specs on the caliper, I have room in the barrel. Specs call for 7.92" radius with 14" rotor and I have over 8".

Clearing the spokes will be the challenge. Specs call for 1.99" to outer edge of caliper from rotor face, I have 1.75.

Here is the disc in the wheel.

I had the W6As installed on my 08 Z06. I believe there is more clearance to the calipers with the Z06 wheels than there is with the base C6 wheels. When I look at the W6A caliper diagram on the Wilwood web site I see the E radius with the 14 inch rotor is 7.88 inches. That should give you enough room inside the barrel. My C6 Z 18 inch front wheels had plenty of space between the caliper and the barrel. I had a set of LG World Challenge 18 inch wheels that also fit although the barrel on those wheels was stepped so the middle portion was narrower than the outer edges. The issue is the distance from the caliper to the back of the spokes. I take it you have measured the wheel to get the 1.75 in distance from the wheel's hub contact face to the back side of the spokes? If that is the correct measurement then you are short about a 1/4 inch. I would use a 1/4 inch spacer to move the wheel out. You don't necessarily need to change lug studs to do this. You can go with extended thread lug nuts. They have a conical face just like the stock lug nut but extend into the stud hole in the wheel to give you more threads to hold the wheel. I use these with my CCW track wheels since the stock C6 and C7 Ceramic brakes along with some Wilwood two piece rotors have an inset in the middle of the rotor face which requires the use of a spacer for the CCWs to fit the rotor face. CCW sells the extended thread lug nuts so people don't have to change stud length.

Here is a picture of what I am talking about.

Not sure how much the thread is extended by but it should be close to a 1/4 inch. These will also work if you don't use spacers so you can get 20 of them so you have matching lug nuts front and rear.

Bill,

Thank you very much. I'll look up the lugs.

Marc,

I ran the W6A on the front of a C6Z with stock sized rotors. I ran OEM C5Z REAR wheels on the front with no clearance issues. These OEM C5 rear wheels are 18" x 10.5" with 8 1/16" backspacing.

I ran 18" x 12" aftermarket OEM C5 Z06 replicas with 8 7/8" back spacing with stock calipers and rotors.

I never ran the W6A on my C5. FWIW, I ran CCW classics on my C5 but I was also using the stock, OEM calipers and rotors on the car. The CCW Classics did/would not clear the W6A calipers on my C6Z.

Rick

Rick,

Thank you. The C5 18 x 10.5 wheels on all fours will be perfect for the track.

Some wrenching over the weekend. SKF bearings in the front with the Wilwoods/14x1.25 Z06 Rotors/SS brake lines.

Todd @ TCE gave me a GREAT price on the kit with BP20 pads.

Next weekend rear wheel bearings, rebuild OE calipers, SS brake lines, and flush brake fluid.

I talked to Wilwood about brake pads before I ran COTA. I had done a lead-follow at a smaller track with the BP-10 and did not like them.

They recommended BP-30 so I got some for the front. Liked them a lot.

I run BP-20 all around now on the street and will reinstall the BP30 if/when I track the car again.

Most of these kits are shipping with BP20 now as standard.

BP10 has no place on the track with such a car. By all means please avoid that.

I have some 30s in stock I think but prefer the Poly (Raybestos) line of A, B, H for track use.

I'm good with the 20s for the street with the OE pads in the rear. I'll have to decide what will go in at the track. They don't list the 30s for the W6A caliper so I'll be leaning toward the H compound, with according to Todd, E compound in the rear.

All this talk about the track and I have months of work to do before that can happen

Just to close the loop on this thread, I had to install 3/4" spacers on the front for the C6 wheels to clear the W6A calipers.
