Default Oil coming from rear end, dealer says from diff. overheating??

I've been having this slight oil leak from the rear end of the vehicle for the past year, very slight. I took it to the dealer earlier in the year, they put dye, and couldnt find anything. Now they are saying the oil is coming from the overheating of the diff, not the transmission, and its caused by driving too fast??? First of all i cant remember the last time i went over 120mph, and second, isnt this car made for that? Anybody have any experience with that? I have an extended gmpp for another 10k miles. Does the diff and a vent for overheating? Does the transmission have a vent? Which is more likely to overheat?

thanks,
Chan

:bs Typical GM dealerhip service dept! Your leak is probably coming from the driver's side diff cover. Its been a problem since the C5s were put on the market.

I think there is a TSB for it. Perhaps someone will post it.

They could be right!? Mine "leaked" (after some spirited driving), so I cleaned it and ran the car as usual. No leak. Of course, I changed the diff fluid at about the same time and made sure that I put in the correct amount; some reports of "over-fill" from the factory. :yesnod: :)

When the diff gets hot, if it has been overfilled, it will force fluid out the vent. Mine did this for two hot Dallas summers but has since stopped.

Same here. Thought I had the cover seal leak, but wiped it away 3 weeks ago and now nothing.Must be coming from the vent!

Make them get it right and keep track of how many times they try.

I made GM buy back my 2001 vert for this very thing (there were a couple of other items as well).

Good luck

This was a common problem on older vettes, caused by spirited driving. The cure was really very simple, a short piece of tubing clamped to the vent. This raised the vent outlet and pretty much eliminated the problem...

thats what i thought. ill call the gmpp people myself. ill need a tech to verify to gmpp that it shouldnt come out from the vent. the oil color was more red, so maybe from the trans vent?? i didnt know the rear end had green.

Say whip383, I had the same rear differential leak.I thought the same as you were thinking...it was from the over flow. I took my vette to Anderson Chevroltet dealers in Menlo Park, CA three weeks ago and they ended up replacing (under warranty) rear differential parts. The mechanic noticed the leak coming from the left side differential cover. He installed a new differential O-ring, axle seal, cradle nuts and filled it with differential lube. So far no leaks. Since your vette is under warranty take it in and let them tell you there conclusions. I mean to a different Chev Dealer or someone who specializes in performance cars. Good Luck

I took mine in for this and they kept it for 3 days, gave it back , and told me it was just the vent. I think I may find a new dealership to work on my ride.
