C5 Z06 180 degree header build thread

Melting Slicks
This would be the second C5 with 180* headers, that I'm aware of. Several years ago ATI Performance Engineering built a wicked C5Z autocross car with a set.

Primary tube #3 complete.
And damn! #1 primary at it's shortest route would end up a touch over 40" long. Making the #1 primary the priority, the #5 will suffer the same fate. And looking to the passenger side I fear problems will be worse due to the spark plug angle. I've had plan B on the back burner, time to incorporate it. This will happen no matter how many headaches caused or beers drank pondering possibilities.

If this were mine it would be one of those stories "he took it apart 30 years ago to do something then just covered it".
Impressive indeed.

Plan B in effect, Steve at Tubular Techniques got these bent and flared for me,
4 at 20 degrees and 4 at 7 degrees... and 2 more of each because i know I'll screw some up along the way.
Going with 4 into 1 flat collectors. I looked briefly but not too hard for off the shelf flat collectors but came up with nada. Probably because I did not look to hard, wanted to make them myself because at 40 I have almost a full head of hair and thought is was time to pull some out in frustration.

DON'T DO IT, you'll regret it later!!!
On a serious note, did you try looking up 'Burns Stainless' or 'Dr. Gas'?

Absolutely bonkers. Who cares how much power it makes, I just want to hear that sound...
Here is a video of a C5 with 180* headers from way back in the day.

Dr. Gas is the man behind the 180 degree headers in Sterling Martin's Nascar entry from the mid nighties. I bought a pair of his Spintech mufflers for my SB2 powered RX7 years ago, they sounded awesome.

Not much of an exciting update. Just the start of the jig for the 4 into 1 flat merge collectors.
Some 1 3/4" round 6061 bar stock sliced, faced, drilled, and tapped on my work's metal lathe.
Attached to a scrap piece of 3" x 3" x 3/8" angle iron.
The pieces bent and expanded by Tubular Techniques before they are cut to merge.
And the beginning of the layout for the jig for cutting the pieces.
Hopefully some good progress to come this weekend...

It does sound ever so nice yet I'm hoping for more. I'm not sure what is off in it's sound to my ears, maybe they weren't equal length. I'm hoping for something closer to the sound of the headers I built for my Howe TA2 chassis car that are in the first post of this thread. I'm sure mufflers and x pipe configuration will play a large role in the end result and I plan to play around in those areas as well.

What ruins the "sound" is the tendency to sound like a Subaru with the "warble" that we're all familiar with. Either that, or an air cooled Beetle...

I see where you're going where the header will look like a typical header and the magic is in the collector. But wouldn't it be better to build the collectors so you don't end up with the 3" outlets directly above each other?
With the one you've started, put the collector outlet to the right and down compared to the 4 inlet tubes. Then, ideally after you build the 2nd one you just flip it and they will nest so the 2 rows of inlets are above each other while the outlets are beside each other. The end result would be that the inlets and outlets would be in the same or similar locations as the 4-into-1 collectors you first started with.
