Part is $10-$15, and I removed the intake to do mine. I would do both sides. The drivers side is really easy and accessible. Some guys have had sucess with undoing the hoses on the drivers side and spraying Brake Cleaner, or WD40 into the valves to loosen them up. This is thought to be a short term fix as replacing the check valve is the perm fix.

Takes about 45 min to 1 hour to take the intake out, and about 15-20 min to take out the pipe the valve is on.

No way I would Pay $500 for this, unless you have money to burn, or really, really don't like wrenching.

Google search removing the intake and the job is really easy. 2.5 hours max.

Hope this helps.

I did the spray cleaner down the driver side tube in my car. Used throttle body cleaner (about 1/2 a can) little at a time, then followed that by using an air compressor to push it thru the line. Did that 5-6 years ago, never seen that error since. Might try that first, if it does not fix it, than replacement will be necessary.

On many cars after 10 years or more the air check valve get plugged or carboned up causing a code
Like you mentioned this can cost over $500 to repair however you are still not guaranteed
that the codes will dis appear---
I chased this same issue on my 98 for many months---Finally i decided to simply DELETE all the secondary air codes in my tune and the codes where gone permanently--
AIR codes do not affect or have anything to do with normal engine operation--They are simply a smog issue--In fact if you replace the check valves everything may operate normally but the code still appears----Just because of age or many miles---
I turned off all the AIR codes permanently annever had this problem again
Your best bet is to have a mail order tuner delete all the AIR codes for you--This is normally around only $150 from vendors on the forum

Got mine turned off. Removed all the hoses and crap, makes the engine bay easier to maneuver around
