What's a good replacement for the trans fluid?

Assuming from your name you have a manual, I used Amsoil Torque Drive synthetic.

I've been reading the discussions about the trans fluid in the manuals and changed my 2003 a while back with the torque drive from Amsoil also. What exactly are these blocker ring things anyway and I can't imagine why anyone in the're right mind would put something paper in a transmission to begin with.
I don't know what they are or what they do but why paper and what did they change it to later on. I've always wondered about this subject.
