Hurst vibration noise at shift **** FIXED.
I installed the Hurst shifter in my Z06. I had an annoying problem with a buzz from the stock shifter **** area. I finally solved the buzzing which is obviously a resonance in the shift stick that gets amplified at the shift **** and locking pin under the plastic **** cap. Taking the cap off doesn't make it go away. You have to "terminate" the vibration line at the top of the shift stick and ****. The Dynomat dampens the shift stick vibration and connects the cap and shift **** in a fully damped way. I had already wrapped some Dynomat around the stick below the boot to no avail. But when I cut up some pieces of Dynomat and stuffed the area under the plastic cap with it, and jammed the plastic cap back down tight, the buzzing stopped. Try tapping on the cap with your fingernail-it sounds hollow. Fill it with dynomat and it is solid. Buzz is gone. (I also wrapped the base of the shifter with Dynomat when I installed the shifter but that had NO effect on the buzzing, though I think it helped some in cutting down transmission noise some.) If you want to keep your stock ****, try the Dynomat, it works.

I tried teflon tape on the lower part of the threads at first. **** rattled. Then I wrapped it all the way up to the top and multiple turns. The **** rattle went away. Unfortunately, the shifter is just much noisier then the stock unit and my wife hates it. I think it may be coming out in the near future.

I got a sheet (plenty for several installations) at Circuit City in the auto stereo department. It is not cheap, but it is pretty neat stuff. Heavy black "sticky stuff" bonded to heavy foil. The stuff is...heavy.There seem to be two kinds, regular and "Xtreme" I got the "Xtreme" becasue that's what they had. Works for me.

Does it look like this??
If so, I got it from Lowe's. It's called FrostKing Duct Insulation. I put it on my wheel wells to help deaden tire noise when I installed my Z06 ducts. It costs 15 bucks/roll. It says on the package that it stops vibration.
Tom, I'll bring you some and see if we can stop the vibration of the stock **** on your B&M.

I'm interested in a method of quieting down the transmission noise, especially when you give it some gas.

I think they also get quieter over time. Mine was a little noisy about 1 year ago when I first installed it but now it is silent.

Mine buzzes and I've tried a few things and am sick of it, but I don't want to buy a whole roll of dynamat if it's not going to fix the buzz.
Is the "buzz" primarily when you accelerate, especially in lower gears?

Free Dynomat to try on your shifter
The Dynomat is different looking from the duct insulation. It is much denser. Instead of an insulation mat it is a gum- like tar.
I WILL MAIL YOU ENOUGH DYNOMAT TO USE ON YOUR STOCK SHIFT **** FREE. Just send me a prepaid, preaddressed envelope with two stamps and I will cut you off enough to fill the top of the shifter. I will do this until I run out of Dynomat.

Here's a thought, believe it or not. I stopped by the plumbing supply store tonight to pick up some gasket material for the re-installation of my stock shifter. They have toilet ***** there that are made of rubber and look to fit the shifter and mate with the close out boot. I am thinking for a couple of bucks this might be worth trying. Thoughts?

Re: Free Dynomat to try on your shifter (vettenuts)
My Hurst was just fine when I first installed it. After I installed my pullies the shifter rattles like crazy under WOT. I think the biggest reason is that I went back to a very light Delrin pistol grip ****. I'm going to have a heavier **** made and try adding wieght to the shaft.

Re: Free Dynomat to try on your shifter (RCswish)
I agree with RC. A heavy **** probably does help. Most of the people who have problems with the Hurst are those who used the stock ****. I went with the MGW pistol grip, and it's quite heavier than the stock ****. Im using the softest springs w/o the stops and no rattle or excess roadnoise for me.

Mike,
Do you have any left?? If not no big deal... I plan on getting a new shifter this weekend and I have not made up my mind on which one. I had been using a B&M Ripper on my mustang and I was pretty happy with it but this forum seems to favour the Hurst.... decisions decisions ...
