Default 8.1 Liter 496 ci Big Block stuffed into a C5

Here is a pic of a current GM truck motor - 8.1 Liter 496 Big Block (4.25 bore x 4.37 stroke) - placed in a C5 by someone. I dont have anymore info on this. It was on the ls1edit mailing list.

The 8.1 Liter motor, is basically a modified 454 Big Block motor that GM uses in thier truck line.

 That's one way to lower the front end! What's the HP rating on that motor????? I wouldn't believe it to be more that the LS6...but it must make gobs of torque!

The production 8.1 truck motor is rated at:

Horsepower: 340 @ 4200 rpm
Torque: 455 @ 3200 rpm

But obviously this motor has a lot of potential.

For example to GM 8.1 crate motor for marine use is rated at:

Horsepower: 420 hp @ 5000 rpm
Torque: 505lb-ft @ 4000 rpm

By the way a person named Jim Wilson on the LS1Edit mailing list is the one doing this motor. They are working with it using LS1edit, and ironing out drivability problems, and said he would keep everyone posted. If I hear anything I will post here.

So I could now use the Vette for pulling stumps? :jester

Great Pic Shawn ! Can we say bullet proof :yesnod:

I think the owner of the "Corvette Shop " here in San Diego has the same motor in his Vette.

MAN!!! If it puts those numbers out stock wonder what it would put out bored and stroked. Can you just interchange motors like that? Using truck or marine engines in our cars???

Nothing has potential like a built big block. Thats why they are used in pro stock, top fuel, etc etc.

You could take a 427 bored and stroked LS1 and put it against a 427 Big Block rat motor, and the rat motor would embarrass it.

Big block simply have the ability to breath sooooo much better. Not to mention you can punch them out to 600+ cubic inches very reliably.

Of course GM would never put one in a passenger car because of fuel economy issues. They would supercharge or turbocharge a small block before that did that to stay within the realm of EPA/Fuel Economy compliance.

Plus with a bigblock there is the weight factor, that takes away from handling.

I'm seeing the gap closing up between the small block and big block when talking a similar displacement comparison. Especially with the Gen III motor. It's amazing how much air the LSx head can flow with such small valves when compared to a big block head. Granted, i am speaking of street performance builds, not the mountain motor drag engines displacing 600-800+ cubes.
This 8.1L motor surely has a ton of potential. Take this motor and work the heads, bigger cam and you should be pulling huge #'s.

Anybody have any idea how much something like this would cost? If the C5R blocks are costing upwards of $6k, I would think this stock motor would cost somewhere around $3k maybe??? Sounds like it would be a lot cheaper chunkin' one of these in a car instead of boring and stroking a LSX wouldn't it?

There was an article in either Vette Mag or Corvette Fever Mag about 6 months ago on a similar swap. MANY fitment problems to be overcome, special brackets, body masaging, and moving of accessories. NOT an easy or inexpensive swap by any measure. Stroker or LPE TT car would be my choice before really bastardizing my C-5 with that type of swap.

It looks like an excellent way to screw up a nice car. The LS1/LS6 has the potential to develop more power than 99% of even skilled drivers can use on street rubber, so why ruin the handling by hanging 200+ extra pounds on the front wheels?

GM engineers spent a lot of time/money to solve all types of problems with the flat oil pan on the C5. I find it hard, but not impossible, to believe that someone just welded up a big block pan with out a sump and not have any oil starvation problems on hard cornering unless they went with a dry sump system, which they very well may have.

Definitely a stump puller! I wonder if anyone has stuffed a Duramax into a C5?

Bob
I got one of those Engine here at the house. I forgot it's still in my Truck.
The only thing this has in common with the Vette is the Fly by Wire TB.
Good luck to anyone changing to a Big Block.
