Just tried my first batch of Toluene...
Pinging is down significantly and the throttle response is much crisper. I am very happy with it so far.
I used 1.5 G mixed in with a full tank of gas which should take me from 91 octane (best I have here) to 93 octane which is perfect for my car.
The only downside is the cost, around $8 extra per tank but well worth it I think to stop the pinging.
The octane booster I tried was crap and did nothing.

I tried some of that over-the-counter "octane booster" when I had my 84. I put in a chip and the engine would knock like crazy. I ended up taking it out.

Table shows the effect of adding tolulene - example - 2 gallons of tolulene to 10 gallons gas = 95.3 octane
the base octane in this table is 91

Re: Just tried my first batch of Toluene... ('97 C5)
What is the base octane of the gasoline used, or does it matter? If I start with 93 octane, why add a gallon of tolulene to 10 gallons of gasoline to get 93.4 octane?

Pretty interesting thread. I think I'll try this stuff and see what happens....maybe I should have gone with a higher compression ratio, anyone game for 12.5:1?

Just a note: USE GLOVES and face protection if that stuff is even going to splatter on you a little bit. It is a wicked poison. Otherwise, enjoy the extra performance!

What are the Health Effects?
Short-term: EPA has found toluene to potentially cause the following health effects when people are exposed to it at levels above the MCL for relatively short periods of time: minor nervous system disorders such as fatigue, nausea, weakness, confusion.
Long-term: Toluene has the potential to cause the following effects from a lifetime exposure at levels above the MCL: more pronounced nervous disorders such as spasms, tremors, impairment of speech, hearing, vision, memory, coordination; liver and kidney damage.

about the hazards before working with Toluene and proceed
with caution - for your own sake and for the sake of those
around you.

:iagree: all carbon 6 membered rings are very toxic. benzene causes leukemia and toluene is bad. just be careful. you dont want to end up with horribe medical conditions because you wanted your car to stop pinging.

Yes, you should be VERY careful with it. BUT it was used for years as a parts cleaner in the auto industry. It isn't nuclear waste. ;)

Use basic precautions and you will probably be ok. If your going to be messing with it a lot, I'd wear gloves. And if you go the 55 gallon drum method, make sure it SEALS WELL if you keep it in your garage. You do not want it building up in a closed area.

So, you have no access to 100-octane racing unleaded? That might be a better choice, and there are distributors that will sell it to you in small (barrel) quantities.

Re: Just tried my first batch of Toluene... (Matt Black)
I've seen alot of talk on these forums that octane boost does very little for stock or even moderately modified LS1/6s.
As I understand it, they are designed to run optimally on 92-92 octane and that the computer doesn't really "allow" any benefits from higher octane fuels.
Any comments?
