Default Flashing check engine light - at idle only

Tonight while sitting at a traffic light, probably 1-2 minutes, the check engine light starts flashing. No codes on the DIC. As soon as I pull away, the light disappers.

20 minutes later, sitting at a light again, engine light starts flashing, then goes out when I pull away. Still no codes.

The car is running fine, no codes, but an intermittent flashing check engine light.

Any ideas? :seeya

The codes do not automatically pop into view, you must go get them.

Thanks. I should have been more clear, there were no codes when I pulled them.

When people refer to a burnt/bad/melted plug wire, does that typically mean I can look at the wire and it is obviously melted or bad?

Or is it something that is not necessarily visible? My wires look fine.

I had the same thing happen to me, but I thought I got a code. The light would flash and then stop. You could not tell by looking at the wire. You could use a meter though.Good luck

Thats very strange that you don't atleast show a history code

If it is truly a misfire that is causing the light to flash then you can also use a timing light to watch each plug fire, just connect the clip to each plug wire for a few seconds -or- minutes depending on how bad the problem is, you can tell by watching the light flash as to how well each plug is firing.

I've used this method in the past and it works great, I used it to diagnose a bad O2 sensor that was causing all 4 plugs on the left bank to misfire and the only thing code I would get is P0300 C (misifire) and all my scanner would show was "multiple random cylinders" Once I saw that I decided to monitor the O2 sensor outputs and there it was the left sensor was showing 0 mV.
