block casting numbers ls6?

what about the 3 digit #s?
I've been hearing 168 is a ls1 and 378 is an ls6. What do these numbers mean? The reason I am asking is because I have an opportunity to buy a block, I just want to make sure it is a later block with the "windows" cast into it.
