Default Power steering fluid.....GM only?

All,

Need to get my hands on some power steering fluid and I just realized that the owners manual only calls for a GM fluid. Anyone verified whether or not any of the after market fluids are equivalent? I'd rather not give my $$$ if I can help it.

- TIA

I contacted Redline on this a while back, they told me to stick with the GM as their didn't meet the GM specification. Guess I would go with the GM at this point.

Why not ATF like all other power steering fluids? Anyone have a part # on the GM PS fluid?

I use the NAPA with no problems.

Every few months I suck the old fluid out with a syringe and replace that.

Emailed Valvolin about Synpower Power Steering Fluid:

I have a 2003 Chevrolet Corvette and in the Owners Manual and Service manual it recommends GM P/N 1052884 power steering fluid only and it doesn't say or equivalent. Is Valvoline Synpower compatible or better than the GM fluid?

Valvoline Website Response:

Thanks for your note. The Synpower fluid can be used for this application.

Boy they really went out on a limb!!!!

Believe me, take that as a solid endorsement! GM would love for you to buy every single maint. related item from them if they could. Hell, they would sell you air for your tires if they thought they could get away with it!

Royal Purple ATF Max for me.
Works excellent in cold climates.

Power steering fluid is ATF fluid with out the color additive. I use Mobel 1 ATF in my power steering.
