Default X-Pipes, do they really add power?

Does anyone know if X-pipes really improve performance or is it just vendor Hyp to sell the product. I know they help reduce resonance, but if you're using a non-resonating performance exhaust, do they increase power?

A couple of years ago Hot Rod magazine did a test comparing straight exhaust pipes, an H Pipe , and an X Pipe. The result was there was a small but significant HP gain with the X Pipe. I haven't heard too much on this forum about a X Pipe reducing resonance. What it does is balance the exhaust flow from both banks for every two engine revolutions, or one firing cycle. The firing cycles for most, if not all, American V8's , involves the firing of two cylinders from one bank right after each other, and halfway through the cycle, the same thing occurs on the other bank. This puts two exhaust pulses right behind each other so that each exhaust pipe is trying to flow a lot more gas half the time. When this happens, the pressure is naturally higher in one exhaust pipe. The X Pipe blends the two flow passages together so that the higher pressure in one pipe can bleed off into the other. This tends to reduce the exhaust sound and the pulsing that is heard. I'm sure there are a lot of race car builders that swear by X Pipes for power.

Here's an article on the installation of a Magnaflow catback and x-pipe and the testing they did.

I think an x pipe right after headers will produce a lot better scavaging and add to the efficency as compared to the after cat x-pipes that are mostly used for changing exhaust note/balancing whatever

A X-Pipe reduces the motor boat sound and popping on decelleration!

I remember reading an article that Corvette Mag. did on the Magnaflow X-pipe and they did a dyno test which resulted in a 2 hp gain with the X-pipe.

Thanks for the link to the article, it came in real handy for me.

I am actually on the verge of buying the magnaflow w/ xpipe.
Does anyone have a sound clip of the Magnaflow on a c5?

Based on everything I've read, the further the change/enhancement is placed away from the exhaust port, the less the effect.

Not so sure a properly sized balancing pipe won't provide the same benefit as an expensive x-pipe. Everyone knows the factory balancing pipe is more of a support/brace than balance pipe.

Thanks Patches, your fund of info is amazing. That's a great article, impressive numbers. Still not sure an x-pipe is worth the effort for street use, though.

I have kooks LT headers. The high flow cats and and the X-pipe are welded together. I have the GHL exhaust. Mine pops just as much as it did before I removed the stock system. The popping is much more noticible now because the exhaust is louder.

I think the X-pipe is in the same HP gains as the Granitelli MAF.

If it was a choice of x- pipe or no x-pipe, but you can still install high flow cats either way, Id save my money and put the savings towards another mod. I think Id have less popping if the X was closer to the exhaust instead if closer headers. But I understand there is a little power loss that way.
